"I feel incredibly fortunate to have been placed with this family and am very thankful of the SOL directors for finding such a good fit. It's been especially nice to have the company of the twin sons, who are also my age and fellow musicians. They helped me get a used guitar on my first week in Costa Rica! We've enjoyed playing music together ever since. My host mom is fantastic and a terrific cook. I'm glad that each week I'm able to find new ways in Spanish to tell her how much I love her cooking :) Spending time with this family has been a pleasure and has helped tremendously in improving my Spanish. "Jessenia, one of my onsite directors, is awesome! She has been amazing at making me feel at home in Costa Rica and helping me find my way here. She's great at getting us the information we need and being professional when necessary. Though, also fun, funny and comforting when appropriate. My favorite cultural activity was the cooking class! Our hosts were so kind and helpful. It was so much fun to learn to make and to try some Costa Rican dishes. Volcán Arenal, one of our excursions, was so fun, too. I liked being in a place where we could just run around, feel safe and relax in the hot springs or go hiking. Mama Tica has been incredible. She always makes an effort to make sure I understand what she is saying and gives me corrections and feedback about how to properly say what I am trying to say. She has been a great teacher. Along with helping me with Spanish, she has cooked me so many different dishes because she really wants me to try many different tastes of Costa Rica. For that, I am so appreciative! She's made me feel at home from the moment I got here. I love my Mama Tica. Through my time in Costa Rica, I have been learning so much Spanish. I had an incredible teacher who has taught me a lot - in a very fun and easily understandable manner. Also, the fact that we have class every day, and that we can practice at home, makes all of the information stick a lot better. Sol is a great program for those who want a little guidance around the county on their off time. They will help you feel totally comfortable and explore your place." View Less

"My onsite directors have been so wonderful! They're friendly, knowledgeable, and enjoy showing us their beautiful country. I love their emphasis on supporting local businesses. Also, I love hearing Spanish all over the place in public. I don't have to decide to turn on Spanish audio on a movie, or play a Spanish song to hear the language, like I do at home. I just walk outside my bedroom to talk to Mama Tica or watch the news. This constant listening and speaking helps my abilities. I've gotten out of my comfort zone a couple times, and it's been worth it! Overall, everyone involved with Sol has been great! They are quick to respond to any questions, and offered help with anything they could. The excursions and cultural activities have been so much fun, and are all things that "represent" the country and the people. I could not have picked a better program to go with." View Less

"I was very pleased with how easy it was to get help and information from Sol! The directors and program assistants at Sol couldn't have been more helpful. They were always willing to chat if you needed and they always had good suggestions or tips for the areas. This trip was incredible. I got to meet many new and close friends. I also got to really experience life in another country. The host family experience really helped me appreciate the culture and learn more about it. Previously, I have done other 3 week experiences, but they were moving around and in hostels or hotels. Staying with a host family really made the experience. I also can't stress how great the program is as a whole. I thought the directors were thorough. There were options to go see things outside of planned excursions and the planned excursions were perfect. I think my biggest challenge was actually just spending time with people who I might not have typically spent time with. I can seclude myself when I don't really "fit in" and in this program you can't do that. I really got to learn how to be with people who don't click with me, which I think is a skill everyone should learn. I really couldn't have been happier with my experience with Sol and Costa Rica." "My favorite culture activity was the cooking class! It was such a fun and interactive experience. I also loved the dance class! I wish we had more of both of those. My favorite excursion was the water and Los Lagos resort. It was amazing to see and experience the hot springs. Plus having dinner and breakfast included was so nice. MY HOST FAMILY IS AMAZING!!!! They loved us so well and always went out of their way to clean our clothes and make us feel at home. I loved that they spoke Spanish with us consistently and asked us about our lives. My roommate and I also got to know their extended family that live upstairs. They were so kind and would take us into the city to experience more cultural things during their free time. My host family has made the trip for me thus far. One day my papa Tico asked me what my favorite food was. I respond with “Honey Bunches of Oats.” The next day, he drove over an hour to find my favorite cereal so I could have a taste of home in Costa Rica. I felt so special and cared for. These two lovely individuals are incredible and I could not be more thankful to have been paired with them." View Less
