"My mama Tica has been my favorite part of my stay here in Costa Rica. The SOL team did a perfect job matching me up with Flora, copying exactly my family situation in the States with this new family. She is sweet, a great cook and helpful. I loved talking to her over every meal and watching movies with her and her daughter. Their home is beautiful and I felt comfortable every single day. When I would leave for weekend excursions, and especially during Semana Santa I missed my mama Tica, her cooking and the feeling of home. She took care of me when I was sick, she invited me to go grocery shopping with her, she shared stories with me and she always had something delicious and fulfilling waiting for me on a plate. I know when I go back to the States I will be more sad about being away from her than I was sad about missing anything from my real home. I am not ready to leave her or [her daughter]. It was an amazing experience having the opportunity to build a relationship with [her daughter], I really felt like a big sister! I hope to stay in touch with these amazing women for as long as possible. Coming to Costa Rica has showed me that I can do whatever I put my mind to, it has shown me that I can be independent enough to leave my comfort zone where all of my familiar friends, food and even language are waiting for me and totally submerse myself into something brand new. The benefits are endless, starting with my journey to becoming fluent in Spanish, my newfound self love and appreciation, and the acceptance of new ideas into my life. [...] I used SOL as a guiding experience, I was a forensic science student slowly realizing that she didn't want to be stuck in a lab copying DNA all day everyday. I knew I wanted to travel, so I made the decision to study abroad. Learning Spanish here has encouraged me to declare a minor in Spanish at my university, and being surrounded by my SOLmates has influenced me to change my major to Sociology. I love people, I love helping and learning about culture. I was not passionate about my major but in my future I can see myself caring more about my schoolwork. [...] Coming to Costa Rica has taught me a broad spectrum of things about Life. Conservation and how to be green and the importance of accepting other people and understanding all are equal are just two examples. I used to think I was a pretty liberal person, but now I know I have definitely opened my mind to many more issues." View Less

She and her husband also made sure that you kept up or were knowledgeable about the news going on in Spain, and most of the time I was learning more from them then I was at school. I would say that they are one of the best, if not the best family to stay with for sure. " View Less

Loles cooked the most AMAZING meals, the best food I have had in a long time! Nico always brought back fresh fruit from his garden, which was amazing! Loles was always insisting on doing our laundry and new sheets once a week, which was so nice! Our house was so clean and comfortable always, such a comforting feel right when you walk in! They were always wanting to help us plan our excursions and find the best transportation options. There was a few times I felt sick and Loles even brought me food in bed. I cannot express how lovely my family is, I am going to be so sad when I leave! They truly made my study abroad experience one of a kind.... I truly love them!!!" View Less

"Words can't even describe my time here with my Tico family. From the moment I first stepped into their home, I was welcomed with open arms and cared for. I honestly have been part of the family since day 1. We eat meals together, even when I'm late for a meal my mama Tica will sit with me. I know she was worried about the language barrier we had but language was no longer a factor after me being here a couple of days because we bonded so well. I loved hanging out with my hermano Tico, Pepe, he is funny and helped me with understanding my mama Tica when I couldn't comprehend what she was asking. My papa Tico is so funny and lively. He made me miss my dad even more because he reminded me of him. Diana, my hermana Tica, is graceful and lovely just like my mama Tica. Everyone in this house is bonded by love and kindness. I know it sounds like a cliche but this family has changed my life forever. I hate to leave them. I hate to continue on with my life back in the states knowing that I have another family here in Costa Rica. I will never forget them and I am forever grateful that Senora Nancy welcomed me with open arms." View Less

If there was anything that me and my roommate needed we would immediately be offered it. We were well fed, our laundry was taken care of almost everyday, and they were willing to help us with anything regarding our pursuit of learning the Spanish language. To be honest living with this host family is something that I will never forget, and the experience is something I will be always grateful for. Whoever lives with Rosemary and Heraldo next will definitely be in good hands, and they will be lucky to have been chosen to live with this family. " View Less
