"[My directors] are what made this program so transformative for all of us - they did a great job of provoking our interest in culture and history throughout every excursion and meeting. Without our onsite directors and their support, wisdom, encouragement and humor, I wouldn't be leaving Costa Rica with such an enriched perspective on the world and interest to explore more. Also, I was placed with the best host family in Costa Rica, and I will never stop bragging on them. My family was huge, with huge hearts and lots of love, laughter and food all the time. I learned so much from their perspective on the world. They will be in my heart forever. [SOL] is the best choice you'll ever make." View Less

"My mama Tica has been my favorite part of my stay here in Costa Rica. The SOL team did a perfect job matching me up with Flora, copying exactly my family situation in the States with this new family. She is sweet, a great cook and helpful. I loved talking to her over every meal and watching movies with her and her daughter. Their home is beautiful and I felt comfortable every single day. When I would leave for weekend excursions, and especially during Semana Santa I missed my mama Tica, her cooking and the feeling of home. She took care of me when I was sick, she invited me to go grocery shopping with her, she shared stories with me and she always had something delicious and fulfilling waiting for me on a plate. I know when I go back to the States I will be more sad about being away from her than I was sad about missing anything from my real home. I am not ready to leave her or [her daughter]. It was an amazing experience having the opportunity to build a relationship with [her daughter], I really felt like a big sister! I hope to stay in touch with these amazing women for as long as possible. Coming to Costa Rica has showed me that I can do whatever I put my mind to, it has shown me that I can be independent enough to leave my comfort zone where all of my familiar friends, food and even language are waiting for me and totally submerse myself into something brand new. The benefits are endless, starting with my journey to becoming fluent in Spanish, my newfound self love and appreciation, and the acceptance of new ideas into my life. [...] I used SOL as a guiding experience, I was a forensic science student slowly realizing that she didn't want to be stuck in a lab copying DNA all day everyday. I knew I wanted to travel, so I made the decision to study abroad. Learning Spanish here has encouraged me to declare a minor in Spanish at my university, and being surrounded by my SOLmates has influenced me to change my major to Sociology. I love people, I love helping and learning about culture. I was not passionate about my major but in my future I can see myself caring more about my schoolwork. [...] Coming to Costa Rica has taught me a broad spectrum of things about Life. Conservation and how to be green and the importance of accepting other people and understanding all are equal are just two examples. I used to think I was a pretty liberal person, but now I know I have definitely opened my mind to many more issues." View Less
