Loles cooked the most AMAZING meals, the best food I have had in a long time! Nico always brought back fresh fruit from his garden, which was amazing! Loles was always insisting on doing our laundry and new sheets once a week, which was so nice! Our house was so clean and comfortable always, such a comforting feel right when you walk in! They were always wanting to help us plan our excursions and find the best transportation options. There was a few times I felt sick and Loles even brought me food in bed. I cannot express how lovely my family is, I am going to be so sad when I leave! They truly made my study abroad experience one of a kind.... I truly love them!!!" View Less

Other programs do not do as many activities which I see as a major disadvantage because there are many awesome things I would not have done if it were not for Sol." View Less

However, staying with a host family and being directly immersed in the Spanish culture helped me quickly acclimate and become comfortable with speaking and exploring. The fears that I had at the beginning of the trip turned into the greatest advantages of studying abroad—I have learned so much in this short amount of time." View Less

"Words can't even describe my time here with my Tico family. From the moment I first stepped into their home, I was welcomed with open arms and cared for. I honestly have been part of the family since day 1. We eat meals together, even when I'm late for a meal my mama Tica will sit with me. I know she was worried about the language barrier we had but language was no longer a factor after me being here a couple of days because we bonded so well. I loved hanging out with my hermano Tico, Pepe, he is funny and helped me with understanding my mama Tica when I couldn't comprehend what she was asking. My papa Tico is so funny and lively. He made me miss my dad even more because he reminded me of him. Diana, my hermana Tica, is graceful and lovely just like my mama Tica. Everyone in this house is bonded by love and kindness. I know it sounds like a cliche but this family has changed my life forever. I hate to leave them. I hate to continue on with my life back in the states knowing that I have another family here in Costa Rica. I will never forget them and I am forever grateful that Senora Nancy welcomed me with open arms." View Less

If there was anything that me and my roommate needed we would immediately be offered it. We were well fed, our laundry was taken care of almost everyday, and they were willing to help us with anything regarding our pursuit of learning the Spanish language. To be honest living with this host family is something that I will never forget, and the experience is something I will be always grateful for. Whoever lives with Rosemary and Heraldo next will definitely be in good hands, and they will be lucky to have been chosen to live with this family. " View Less

"My internship has been a great challenge pushing me to understand Spanish at a faster pace and in some cases people with different accents. The work at the social center is very rewarding and having the opportunity to help others and understand life and hardships in another country is incredible and has been vital to my education. This year one of the greatest benefits to my experience is coming back to live with my host family. They have supported me in my internship and with my research and provided me with a home and family that I know I will have forever. " View Less

The host family experience really helped me appreciate the culture and learn the culture. I have done other 3 week experiences but they were moving around and in hostels or hotels. Staying in a host family really made the experience. I also can't stress how great the program is as a whole. I thought the directors were thorough, there were options to go see things outside of planned excursions and the planned excursions were perfect." View Less

"Jessenia, one of my onsite directors, is awesome! She has been amazing at making me feel at home in Costa Rica and helping me find my way here. She's great at getting us the information we need and being professional when necessary but also fun and funny and comforting when she can be. Also, my Mama Tica has been incredible. She always makes an effort to make sure I understand what she is saying and gives me corrections and feedback about how to properly say what I am trying to say. She has been a great teacher. She has cooked me so many different dishes because she really wants me to try many different tastes of Costa Rica, and for that I am so appreciative. She's made me feel at home from the moment I got here, and she's prayed with me for every meal, always has worship music on in the house, and reads and talks about the Bible with me, which are all very important things for me. I love my Mama Tica. In addition, I have been learning so much Spanish. I had an incredible teacher who has taught me a lot in a very fun and easily understandable manner. Also, the fact that we have class everyday, and that we can practice at home, makes all of the information stick a lot better. SOL is a great program for those who want a little guidance around the county on their off time. They will help you feel totally comfortable and explore your place. " View Less
